Butterfly Room - “High Needs” Resource Base

Welcome to Butterfly Room

“Be inspired by our creative learning adventure….”

At Norcot, our “High Needs” Resource Base is overseen and run by Norcot Early Years Centre Staff. The High Needs Resource Base is for children who have a range of additional learning needs including: Speech, Language and Communication, Sensory Processing, Cognition and Learning and Social Communication. This provides and early boost for their learning before they transfer into a Mainstream Primary School or move to a Specialist Provision. The high needs base caters for a maximum of 20 part-time places for three-to-four-year-olds, supported by five experiences staff members with regular visits from a Speech and Language Therapist and Occupational Therapist.

Children will access a range of interventions to support their development and learning including Intensive Interaction approaches, use of symbols and picture exchange system (PECS), where appropriate.  The provision includes a main classroom, a soft play room and a sensory room. During the week, the children also access Forest School, the library and a large garden area.

Throughout the session, the children are supported to build their communication skills, their engagement and their independence. The children in the base will integrate with their mainstream peers in Rainbow Room, putting into practise their learning.

Families from both Norcot Nursery and those across Reading Borough Council can apply for their child to be considered for a space using the expression of interest form. Please note, places are decided by a panel of professionals from Reading Borough Council and as a result, the application process is separate from our usual admissions.
